Winterfest 2010

We headed up to Lake Geneva February 5 & 6 for their Winterfest and the National Snow Sculpture Competition. Nolan & I spent the night within walking distance of the event. Russ had to work on Saturday but he drove up Friday night to have dinner with us and to play in the pool with Nolan. Nolan was very happy Dad came up - they played Godzilla in the pool, with Nolan of course in the role of Godilla and Daddy in the role of Random Bad Monster.

The snow sculptures were very impressive to see. Friday night we were able to watch the artists in action. Nolan and I were both enamored with the pig on the motorcycle, which turned out to be two pigs when we checked again Saturday morning.

Nolan was disappointed that the promised area for kids to make their own snow sculptures never appeared, so he found a piece of ice that he proclaimed to be his ice sculpture.

We walked to Egg Harbor on Saturday morning for breakfast. Although a relatively short walk, we were both quite ready for our hot cocoa and coffee when we arrived! After returning to our hotel and bundling up a bit more, we headed down to the fest for a final look at the sculptures. It was VERY crowded. If we go again next year, I think we'll just go up Friday night - it was more fun to watch the artists work and it was nowhere near as crowded. Nolan was fascinated to watch cars parking on the iced over lake, as well as the ice fishermen shanties. He could hardly believe it when I told him that we were standing on the same beach that we visited last summer when his cousins, Dad & Uncle Kurt buried him in the sand!

I'll leave you with my personal favorite of the snow sculptures we saw.

Winter Concert - Kindercare

We attended Nolan's first school concert on Wednesday, January 13th. His class sang two songs and it was just adorable! Uncle Kurt was able to attend, and it's actually a good thing more family members couldn't make it, as it was basically standing room only (aside from the parents brave and/or short enough to sit in the tiny chairs - notice me there in the black & white shirt sitting with the all the kids in the audience) and very crowded. Kindercare, where Nolan goes for private kindergarten after public kindergarten in the morning, isn't really set up for an assembly. BJ Hooper will have a concert in March that will be in a more standard setting - auditorium, etc. - and we're hoping more of you can join us for that one!

Nolan entertains us while we're waiting for the concert to start

Miss Megan has the kids tell jokes while we wait for it to be their turn to sing. Nolan was convinced that every camera in the room was aimed specifically at him.

Finally! The concert starts, and two songs & lots of huge grins from all the parents in the room later, the concert ended.

We went out for pie at Baker's Square afterwards - Nolan wanted carrot cake and ended up really liking it. Coincidentally, unbeknownst to us ahead of time, it ended up being free slices of pie night. Our coffee counted as a purchase, so the pie (not the carrot cake though) was free.
